Dinner for $4.92

Tonight’s dinner is based off of a recipe my Dad made up (or so I’m told…I’ve never actually seen him make it 🙂 ).  Growing up we always called it TunaRot, and I promise it tastes better than the name would imply.  It takes about 35 mins to make, but 25 mins of that is it sitting in the oven. This is also one of the hardest recipes to mess up!!


  • 1 Can of Tuna
  • 1 can Cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 bag wide egg noodles (might have been about 4 cups?)
  • potato chip crumbs (I used some mashed up, stale tortilla chips tonight, and pretzels are really good too)
  • About 2 cups broccoli
  • About 2 handfuls of shredded cheddar cheese
  • Dash of salt, pepper, oregano, and garlic powder

To Make:

  1. Boil water for noodles
  2. Pre-heat oven to 350
  3. In a casserole dish, mix together tuna, mushroom soup, spices and broccoli
  4. Cook noodles for 6 minutes, and drain.
  5. Add noodles to casserole dish and mix together
  6. Top with cheese and chip crumbs
  7. Bake for about 25 mins, or until cheese is melted and chips just start to get toasted.

The Total:

  • Tuna:0.64
  • Soup: $1.12 (I should have waited until it was on sale but oh well)
  • Noodles: Bag cost $1.50 so 0.75 for half
  • Chip crumbs: free?
  • Broccoli: Bag cost $1.98 and used about 1/3, so 0.66
  • Cheese: Can’t remember, but I usually pay about $7.50 for an 8 cup bag, so I used maybe $1.75?
  • Spices: too cheap to figure out

        Total: $4.92 plus I have leftovers for lunch
